Salar de Uyuni 3 Day Tour (Shared & English)

This is the most basic tour option we offer to visit Uyuni and the surrounding desert. Accommodations are simple hostels and desert shelters that do not include heating, and may lack Wi-Fi or hot showers in some cases. The 4x4 vehicle used is shared with 5 to 6 passengers, so space can be limited and the ride may feel uncomfortable for some.

We use 4x4 Land Cruisers or Nissan Patrols, typically from 2000 to 2006, as they are the only models durable enough to handle Bolivia’s extreme desert terrain. While they are in good mechanical condition, they may feel tight or cramped in shared group settings.

The first night is spent in a basic salt hostel, located near the edge of the Salar. Depending on how early you book, we assign the best available hostels. Private rooms with private bathrooms and hot showers may be available upon request. The second night is in a remote desert shelter with very basic services. Electricity is provided via generators, water is limited, and amenities like hot showers, Wi-Fi, or electricity at night can be restricted depending on the time of year. Private rooms with bathrooms may also be available, but hot water is not guaranteed during high-altitude cold seasons.

From December to March, the region experiences its rainy season. During this time, some highlights like Incahuasi Island, Tunupa Volcano, or the salt hostels near the edges of the Salar may become inaccessible due to flooding and safety concerns. In such cases, we reserve the right to adjust the itinerary according to weather conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

This tour takes place at high altitudes, often ranging between 3,600 meters (11,800 ft) in Uyuni and up to 4,800 meters (15,700 ft) in the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve. Because of this, altitude sickness (soroche) is a common experience for some travelers. Common symptoms include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, and nausea—especially during the first day. To help reduce symptoms, we recommend: Staying hydrated (drink plenty of water) Avoiding alcohol and heavy meals the day before the tour Bringing altitude sickness pills like acetazolamide (consult with your doctor beforehand) Moving slowly and resting when needed Our team is trained to assist with minor symptoms. However, this tour is not recommended for people with heart conditions or serious respiratory issues.
