What You Can't Miss
When is the best time to climb Huayna Potosi?
May to September. Those months bring the most stable weather and the firmest snow on the summit ridge, which matters more here than the temperature.
Do I need climbing experience?
No previous ice climbing is needed. The standard route is fully guided and you are taught to move on crampons and use an ice axe on the glacier the day before the summit push. What you do need is solid fitness and, above all, proper acclimatisation in La Paz first.
How many days does the climb take?
Two or three. The three-day version adds a glacier school day and gives your body more time at altitude, which is why most people who summit do it on that itinerary.
Did You Know That...
- How high is it? 6,088 m above sea level
- How far from La Paz? About 25 km — you can see it from parts of the city
- Why is it famous? Often called one of the most accessible 6,000 m peaks in the world
- What does the name mean? Huayna means young in Quechua
